The erstwhile capital of the ex-state of Talcher it is one of the fast growing industrial areas of Orissa. The establishment of Talcher Thermal Power Station, the largest coal-based Fertilizer plant, Heavy Water Plant and the Talcher Collieries has greatly enhanced the importance of the place.

Rail: Talcher railway station on S. E. Railway.

Road: 20-km from Angul and 65-km from Dhenkanal, it is connected with NH 42 by NH 23 at Banarpal. Regular bus services are also available from here.
